Rainforest Plum/ Eugenia candolleana is an edible fruit tree native to the Atlantic rainforest of Brazil known locally by the Portuguese names Cambui Roxo or Murtinha. It is quite rare in the wild and has seen limited use in landscaping for its bright green foliage and purple-black fruits.
Special Feature
It has a thin purple-black skin and a wet, firm, whitish pulp surrounding a loose single seed. The fruit is tasty and sweet similar to a jaboticaba. There are both purple and red fruited forms. In the tropics, the Rainforest Plum blooms at least 4 to 6 times a year.
Uses/Benefits
They are rich in vitamin E, have more Lutein than an Avocado (for eye health), as well as contain Zinc, Folate, Calcium, Potassium, and Magnesium. In the folk medicine of the region of Sergipe, the infusion of leaves has been used for the treatment of pain and fever.Â
